John Rambo Origin Movie In The Works

Millennium Media, the company behind the "Has Fallen", "The Hitman's Bodyguard" and "The Expendables" franchises, are currently working on a new Rambo movie titled "John Rambo", which will be a prequel to 1982 action classic "First Blood". The new installment will be directed by Jalmari Helander ("Sisu", "Rare Exports") from a script by Rory Haines & Sohrab Noshirvani ("Black Adam", "The Mauritanian", "Informer"). Filming is expected to begin this October in Thailand.

While the film's plot is under wraps, it has been described as an origin story following a young John Rambo during the Vietnam War. Casting is in early stages. It has also been reported that Sylvester Stallone is not involved in the project.

The iconic character was created by David Morell in his novel "First Blood", which was adapted into the the 1982 movie starring Stallone. All five films in the franchise have grossed more than $800M worldwide. The final film in the series was 2019's "Rambo: Last Blood", which grossed $92 million at the box office.

Producers include Kevin King-Templeton of Templeton Media, Les Weldon, Jonathan Yunger and Avi Lerner. Executive producers are Trevor Short, as well as Dallas Sonnier and Amanda Presmyk of Bonfire Legends.

Millennium President Jonathan Yunger said: "We are thrilled to introduce a fresh new chapter to the Rambo legacy. This project is a tribute to one of the best franchises in movie history that will appeal to both longtime fans and new audiences alike. With Jalmari Helander at the helm — a filmmaker of exceptional vision and energy — we've found the perfect director to deliver a high-concept action-packed experience."

Helander added: "I have been the biggest fan of Rambo since the age of 11. It is so surreal to be in a situation where I can actually make my own Rambo movie. The chain of events that got me here makes, in a fantastic way, my whole childhood make sense. I can't wait to bring the greatest action hero back to the big screen where he belongs."

cats-razzies-2020-winner-worst-picture-director

It was 2019's most hated film by both critics and moviegoers, and its infamy has been confirmed at this year's Golden Raspberry Awards. Tom Hooper's ill-fated musical earned six Razzies, including Worst Picture and Director, while James Corden and Rebel Wilson received the dreaded trophies in the supporting acting categories.

The Sylvester Stallone action flick "Rambo: Last Blood" didn't go home empty-handed, either, nabbing trophies for Worst remake, rip-off or sequel and Worst reckless disregard for human life and public property. Honestly, that last one is sort of like a badge of honor for a Rambo movie.

Other winners include John Travolta for "The Fanatic", and Hilary Duff for "The Haunting of Sharon Tate".

Eddie Murphy won the Razzie Redeemer award, which honors a past Razzie recipient who has gone on to do better work, in this case Murphy's role in "Dolemite is My Name".

sylvester-stallone-rambo-5
Rumors regarding "Rambo 5" have been floating around for some years now, without any of them actually turning into solid news. The last time I wrote about it on this site was in 2011 (read the article here). Now, however, Sylvester Stallone announced via Twitter that there will indeed be a fifth installment in the franchise and it will be titled "Last Blood: Rambo". Judging from the title, it will probably be the absolute last and final movie in the series. That is, until a reboot gets underway. Anyway, the actor/director/writer also announced that he's currently filming "Creed", the "Rocky" spinoff which focuses on Apollo Creed's grandson, who will be played by Michael B. Jordan ("Fruitvale Station"). He will also star in the crime drama "Scarpa" from director Brad Furman ("The Lincoln Lawyer"), a biopic of Gregory Scarpa, a former capo and enforcer for the Colombo crime family.

The Expendables Sylvester Stallone

Lionsgate has announced that "The Expendables 3" has commenced principal photography in Bulgaria through an official press release which also offers some definitive details about the production. As previously announced, Mel Gibson will star as the villain, an old partner of Barney Ross' (Sylvester Stallone) who seeks revenge. The press release also confirms the presence of franchise newcomers Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Harrison Ford, Kellan Lutz, Glen Powell, Victor Ortiz and Ronda Rousey. But, there's no mention of other big names like Nicolas Cage, Jackie Chan, Milla Jovovich and Mickey Rourke, who were reported to be on board. Anyway, "The Expendables 3" opens on August 15, 2014. Until then, here is the official press release:
"SANTA MONICA, CA (August 19, 2013) – Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF) and Millennium Films will begin principal photography today on THE EXPENDABLES 3, the third installment of THE EXPENDABLES action-thriller franchise, with production shooting on location in Bulgaria and at Nu Boyana Studios in Sofia.

THE EXPENDABLES 3 will feature Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews and Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to their roles in the first two films with Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford joining the all-star cast along with Kellan Lutz, MMA star Ronda Rousey, welterweight boxing champion Victor Ortiz and Glen Powell.

Patrick Hughes (RED HILL) will direct the film, with veteran Dan Bradley (The BOURNE franchise; MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL, QUANTUM OF SOLACE) directing the second unit. THE EXPENDABLES 3 is written by Creighton Rothenberger & Katrin Benedikt, who previously teamed on OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN, and Sylvester Stallone. Avi Lerner, Kevin King-Templeton, Danny Lerner and Les Weldon are producing THE EXPENDABLES 3. Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson and John Thompson are executive producing. Lionsgate will release THE EXPENDABLES 3 in North America and the UK on August 15, 2014.

In THE EXPENDABLES 3, Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables — but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

The production will be overseen by Lionsgate’s Jason Constantine and Eda Kowan.

The first two installments of THE EXPENDABLES have grossed nearly $600 million in combined global box office."

"Crazy Heart" director Scott Cooper will replace Ben Affleck as the writer and director of the big screen adaptation of Stephen King's "The Stand". Affleck was forced to drop out after Warner Bros. announced that he would star as Batman in the upcoming "Man of Steel" sequel. The feature film adaptation has been in production for over two years. At one point, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" director David Yates was interested in taking over the project. King's novel has been adapted once before in 1994 as a TV mini-series. This is probably one of the major issues that the big screen version must overcome: the length. Read a review of the TV movie here.

Rambo lives again. Although rumors about a fifth movie in the franchise have been floating around since 2008's "Rambo", it seems that the fierce warrior will return in a TV series which will be produced by Entertainment One and Nu Image. Sylvester Stallone will not be involved in this new series according to his reps:
"While a television series based on the Rambo property is in development with Entertainment One and Nu Image, contrary to reports, Sylvester Stallone will certainly not reprise his role as the iconic John Rambo for the small screen."

Last year's surprise-hit action film "Act of Valor" will get a sequel. The new film will focus on a team of elite SWAT officers. Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh will return to produce the sequel and Scott Wiper ("The Condemned") will write and direct. It's safe to assume that "Act of Valor 2" will continue the trend set by the first film of casting real-life operatives and shoot in a realistic manner.

For years fans have dreamed of an Arnold Schwarzenegger Sylvester Stallone collaboration in a movie and now we get two such opportunities to see these big guys on the big screen together : the upcoming "The Expendables 2" and a new action-thriller called "The Tomb". The latter movie will be directed by Mikael Håfström ("The Rite", "1408") and is written by Miles Chapman ("Road House 2: Last Call") and Jason Keller ("Machine Gun Preacher", "Mirror Mirror"). According to an official press release, this is what "The Tomb" will be about :
"THE TOMB follows Ray Breslin (Stallone) who is the world’s foremost authority on structural security. He’s analyzed every high security prison and has gained a vast array of survival skills. But all Ray’s ingenuity and knowledge are about to be put to work in the most challenging test he’s ever faced: escaping from the master prison of his own design. Schwarzenegger, in the role of Church, plays a complex inmate with multiple shades of grey. He’s the guy who fights to keep the prisoners from losing their humanity in their darkest hour as they struggle together to stay alive."
Filming will begin this spring in Louisiana. No further cast details have been given and no release date has been set at this time. "The Tomb" is produced by Mark Canton ("300"), Randall Emmett & George Furla ("Rambo"), Robbie Brenner ("Machine Gun Preacher"), and Kevin King-Templeton ("The Expendables"). Arnold Schwarzenegger is also involved in the western/action/thriller "The Last Stand", which is directed by Jee-woon Kim and is scheduled for release on January 18, 2013.
